Community Spotlight: Senior Concerns’ Bargain Boutique and Thrift Store

Senior Concerns’ Bargain Boutique and Thrift Store is one of 13 social service non-profits which receive free rent at the Community Conscience Human Services Center in Thousand Oaks, California. Revenues from the store benefit Senior Concerns which provides programs such as Senior Advocates, Adult Day Care Center, Senior Family Support Service, and Meals on Wheels. We sat down with Senior Concerns President Andrea Gallagher to learn more about their organization.

Shelter From The Storm

During the heavy rainstorms in January and February of this year, the roof of the Human Services Center was judged officially beyond repair. We at Community Conscience knew we had no choice but to replace the roof entirely before the next rainy season.

Shortly after 9:00 am on Monday, May 13, a young woman named Beverly walked toward the front doors of Community Conscience. Pregnant, and holding her two-year old child’s hand, she paused while her daughter tugged at her dress. “Mommy, look at the bunny,” the little girl said, pointing to the colorful, five-foot-tall rabbit outside of the building.

“I love to teach Zumba® moves,” says Andrea, stopping for a moment to catch her breath after a group fitness program. “And I love helping other participants learn about strength training, and even things like stability exercises.” This attitude and passion is commendable in anyone, but it’s especially impressive in Andrea, a young adult with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Community Conscience 2019 Volunteer of the Year

Each year in May Community Conscience has a Spring Luncheon. We invite the Directors of each agency in the Human Services Center, Community Conscience Trustees, and Advisory Council members. Also invited are the elected officials of neighboring cities. It is a chance for each agency housed in the Human Services Center to give a presentation about their incredible services.
